GMCI Talc is a mineral that can be found in nature together with other minerals, forming rocks called soapstone, steatite or talc schist. While all talc ores are soft, hard, waterproof and chemically inert, there are not two talc’s. Talc is an integral aspect of everyday life. The magazines that we read, the polymers in our vehicles and houses, the paints that we use and the tiles that we step on are just some of the things that talc improves.

Talc is a hydrated silicate layer of magnesium with the chemical formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. The elementary sheet consists of a layer of magnesium-oxygen / hydroxyl octahedron sandwiched between two layers of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron. The main or basal surfaces of this elementary sheet do not contain hydroxyl groups or active ions, which explain the hydrophobicity and inertness of the talc.

Talc is practically insoluble in water and in mild acids and alkali. It’s not volatile nor flammable. While it has very little chemical reactivity, talc has a clear attraction to other organic chemicals, i.e. it is herbal. Talc gradually loses its hydroxyl groups above 900 ° C and re-crystallizes into various types of enstatite (anhydrous magnesium silicate) above 1050 ° C. The melting point of Talc is at 1500 ° C.
